Today is the first day of the Celtic Tree Month of Elder. Elder is the last in the cycle until Birch begins the cycle anew on December 24th.
It all makes sense, to me, for Birch to begin on Christmas Eve. Even though I am obviously Pagan, I still celebrate Christmas. It holds a special place in my soul, as it does with many people. It’s a time of purity, of starting fresh, of believing in the joy and magic of the world. Of having faith in your fellow humans.
I don’t know about you, but after 2016, I need to have a little faith. While it may not be healthy, I am going to try to ignore the horrors of our world on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I am going to surround myself in things that I love, people that I can trust and just for a few days I am going to pretend that everything is ok.
Elder is a tree that symbolizes death, the end of a cycle. It’s so incredibly fitting to be here, in this moment. 2016 does equal 9. (2+0+1+6 = 9) and 9 is the end. I’m reminded of a childhood rhyme that I learned”1, 2, buckle my shoe, 3,4, shut the door, 5, 6, pick up sticks, 7,8, lay them straight, 9, 10, do it again.” It’s time for us to turn over a new leaf in 2017 (2+0+1+7 = 10 = 1) Next year is all Aces, my dear. Allow Elder to speak to you in this final days of 2016 and see what it is that we can let go of. See what we need to allow to fall off of us, what is burning away as we walk through the flames of what is to come?
